Lunar New Year Celebrations with David Jones
It’s that time of year again in our culture when we bring out our annual red outfits. A colour symbolic of luck, happiness and prosperity worn throughout Chinese & Taiwanese cultures for Lunar New Year celebrations. The first day of Chinese New Year begins on the new moon that appears between 21 January and 20 February. In 2020, the first day of the Chinese New Year will be on Saturday, 25 January, beginning with the year of the rat.
This year I will be spending Lunar New Year away from my family in South Africa. Traditionally I would help mum to prepare a big festive dinner, however, due to my upcoming art exhibition this year I had to fly back to Sydney a tad earlier than expected. Nevertheless, the festivities in Sydney will be equally as big - beginning with a celebration at David Jones where I was lucky enough to witness the acrobatics of the Lion Dance, make my own origami art and pick out a few of my favourite Lunar New Year products!

After checking out the limited edition Lunar New Year gift sets we were surprised by a lion dance! Lion dance is a form of traditional dance in Asian culture where performers mimic a lion's movements in a lion costume to bring good luck and fortune.
To the amazing team at David Jones - thank you for making Lunar New Year so special for me despite being miles and miles away from home. Being able to watch the dragon dance and shop for Lunar New Year gifts to send home to my family made the experience just as special as being back in South Africa with my own family.

In an attempt to retain the grand, historic public rooms of the 1860s and 1920s - of which the Café Royal was famed for - these Grade II listed spaces have been carefully restored.
I had the pleasure of staying here for two nights - come and see my photo diary and what I got up to.
